    Persistence of UK Real Estate returns: a Markov chain analysis

    The persistence of investment performance is a topic of perennial interest to investors. Efficient Markets theory tells us that past performance can not be used to predict future performance yet investors appear to be influenced by the historical performance in making their investment allocation decisions. The problem has been of particular interest to investors in real estate; not least because reported returns from investment in real estate are serially correlated thus implying some persistence in investment performance. This paper applies the established approach of Markov Chain analysis to investigate the relationship between past and present performance of UK real estate over the period 1981 to 1996. The data are analysed by sector, region and size. Furthermore some variations in investment performance classification are reported and the results are shown to be robust

    From 2D Integrable Systems to Self-Dual Gravity

    We explain how to construct solutions to the self-dual Einstein vacuum equations from solutions of various two-dimensional integrable systems by exploiting the fact that the Lax formulations of both systems can be embedded in that of the self-dual Yang--Mills equations. We illustrate this by constructing explicit self-dual vacuum metrics on R2×Σ\R^2\times \Sigma, where Σ\Sigma is a homogeneous space for a real subgroup of SL(2, \C) associated with the two-dimensional system.Comment: 9 pages, LaTex, no figure

    A qualitative exploration of consumers’ perceived impacts, behavioural reactions, and future reflections of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (2017) as applied to electronic cigarettes

    Background: Electronic cigarette regulations included in the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), Article 20, implemented in Europe by May 2017, aimed to improve safety for e-cigarette consumers, and prevent uptake among non-smokers, particularly young people. Before implementation, there were significant concerns from consumers, industry, and some in the scientific community about the potential negative impact of the TPD on people using e-cigarettes to stay stopped from smoking. To date, there is limited evidence on how the TPD has affected consumers. This study aimed to add insight into how consumers perceived and experienced the regulations. Methods: Qualitative data, collected between March 2018 and March 2019, relating to participant views of the TPD were extracted from 160 interviews/extended surveys of e-cigarette consumers as part of a wider study into e-cigarette use trajectories (ECtra study). Data were thematically analysed. Results: Awareness of the TPD amongst consumers was not universal. Participants’ smoking behaviour did not appear to be influenced by the legislation. Participants were reassured by manufacturing regulations and requirements for ingredients labels. Participants responded negatively to changes perceived to cause inconvenience and extra plastic waste. The product restrictions prompted some participants to purchase non-compliant products illegally, potentially putting their safety at risk. Conclusions: E-cigarette regulation should focus on ensuring product safety. Raising awareness of the TPD amongst consumers and smokers could be beneficial

    Reduced dynamics of Ward solitons

    The moduli space of static finite energy solutions to Ward's integrable chiral model is the space MNM_N of based rational maps from \CP^1 to itself with degree NN. The Lagrangian of Ward's model gives rise to a K\"ahler metric and a magnetic vector potential on this space. However, the magnetic field strength vanishes, and the approximate non--relativistic solutions to Ward's model correspond to a geodesic motion on MNM_N.     Reductions of self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) system for ∗\ast-bracket Lie algebra to the Husain-Park (HP) heavenly equation and to sl(N,{\boldmath{C}) SDYM equation are given. An example of a sequence of su(N)su(N) chiral fields (N≥2N\geq 2) tending for N→∞N\to\infty to a curved heavenly space is found.Comment: 18 page

    Task oriented nonlinear control laws for telerobotic assembly operations

    The goal of this research is to achieve very intelligent telerobotic controllers which are capable of receiving high-level commands from the human operator and implementing them in an adaptive manner in the object/task/manipulator workspace. Initiatives by the authors at Integrated Systems, Inc. to identify and develop the key technologies necessary to create such a flexible, highly programmable, telerobotic controller are presented. The focus of the discussion is on the modeling of insertion tasks in three dimensions and nonlinear implicit force feedback control laws which incorporate tool/workspace constraints.
